ROMA 2026

January 21, 2026

The Town of Smooth Rock Falls was represented at this year’s Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) Conference by CAO-Treasurer Yvan Marchand and Councillor Leslie Gagnon.

Throughout the conference, the delegation met with several ministries to discuss key priorities for our community:

👮‍♂️ Solicitor General (Hon. Michael Kerzner)

  • Raised concerns regarding the rising cost of OPP services.

🏗️ Ministry of Northern Development (Hon. George Pirie)

  • Provided updates on ongoing Town projects, including the industrial park, arena, waterfront development, and walking trails.

  • Shared plans to apply to NOHFC later this year for the outdoor multi-court project.

  • Emphasized that the waterfront project remains a major priority, noting the significant infrastructure costs involved.

🚰 Ministry of Infrastructure (Parliamentary Assistant Amarjot Sandhu)

  • Expressed appreciation for the funding approval for the Sixth Street water and sewer mains replacement project under the Health and Safety Water Stream (announced January 17).

  • Advocated for predictable, multi-year funding that reflects the unique costs and challenges of infrastructure renewal and asset management in small northern municipalities.

The Town thanks all ministry representatives for their time and continued support of rural and northern communities.
