Did you know? Moving snow off of private property on a roadway, sidewalk or other public area, unless it is an approved snow dump location, whether by plowing, shoveling, or otherwise, creates a hazard for motorists and pedestrians and may cause an obstruction to drivers. Even a small amount of snow left on the sidewalk can cause accessibility issues for some of our residents.

Under the Highway Traffic Act, no person shall deposit snow or ice on a roadway or onto a sidewalk without permission in writing so to do from the Ministry or the road authority responsible for the maintenance of the road. Doing so is a direct violation of the Highway Traffic Act which may result in fines or remediation work performed by the Town at the owner’s expense.

Now that winter has arrived, it can be tricky to find enough space to pile the snow in one’s yard. The Town’s snow removal program is designed to keep our roadways and roadsides as clear as possible. Residents who need to remove snow from their yards can use the Designated Snow Dump areas. There are also several local contractors that will remove snow for a fee.

It is also important that residents adhere to the winter parking by-law to assist our Public Works Department during snow removal.

During the period of November 1st to April 30th of each calendar year, no one shall park a motor vehicle on a roadway between the hours of 12:00 am and 7:00 am, during regular daily snow clearing operations, during pre-scheduled snow removal operations or in a manner which causes an obstruction.
