The Town of Smooth Rock Falls is pleased to offer civil marriage solemnization services for couples who prefer a non-religious ceremony in a welcoming and professional setting. Whether you’re planning a simple ceremony at Town Hall or a special celebration at a location of your choice, we’re here to help make your day memorable.

🏛 Town Hall Civil Marriage Ceremonies

Civil marriage ceremonies are available Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., by appointment only, and are conducted by the Municipal Clerk at Town Hall.

Fees:

  • Marriage Licence: $125.00 (tax-exempt)

  • Town Hall Ceremony: $282.50 (taxes included)

We also offer off-site and weekend wedding services for added convenience and flexibility.

Note: A valid Marriage Licence is required for all ceremonies. The fee is $125.00 (tax exempt), and must be obtained prior to the ceremony.

All off-site ceremonies must be arranged in advance and are subject to availability.

If you would like to book a consultation, you can contact us by email or calling us at 705-338-2717. 

You will need to provide the following information at your appointment:

  • A valid Ontario Marriage Licence Application, the form can be found here.
  • Payment including GST/HST (payable by cash, cheque or debit) is required.
  • Proof of divorce for each applicant if remarrying
  • 2 pieces of government-issued identification for each person getting married.

You and your partner will each need to provide two pieces of government issued identification. The first piece of photo ID must be one of the following:

  • Valid drivers’ licence
  • Valid passport

The second piece of ID must be one of the following:

  • Birth certificate
  • Valid passport
  • Canadian citizenship card
  • Immigration record/record of landing
  • Ontario photo ID card
  • Permanent resident’s card

We only accept original pieces of identification. The first and last names must match what is shown on the two pieces of ID.

💍 Marriage Ceremony – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Who can get married in Ontario?

To get married in Ontario, both parties must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age (those under 18 require written parental consent)

  • Not be currently married to anyone else

  • Be mentally capable of understanding the nature of marriage

  • Enter into marriage voluntarily

2. What is a Civil Marriage Ceremony?

A civil marriage ceremony is a non-religious, legal ceremony performed by an officiant authorized under the Marriage Act. These ceremonies can be held at Town Hall or at an approved location.

3. Do we need a marriage licence?

Yes. A Marriage Licence is required to be legally married in Ontario. It must be obtained before the ceremony and is valid for 3 months from the date of issue.

4. How much does a marriage licence cost?

In the Town of Smooth Rock Falls, a marriage licence is $125.00 (tax exempt).

5. How do we apply for a marriage licence?

You can apply in person at Town Hall. Both parties must complete and sign the application, and provide two pieces of government-issued ID each (one must include a photo). Contact the Town in advance to schedule an appointment.

6. Where can the civil ceremony take place?

Civil ceremonies can be performed:

  • At Town Hall (Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., by appointment)

  • At an off-site location within the Town during business hours

  • On weekends or holidays within municipal boundaries

  • Outside municipal boundaries (additional travel charges and HST apply)

7. How do we book a ceremony?

Contact the Town’s Clerk’s Office to arrange a date and time. Ceremonies are by appointment only, and availability may vary, especially during peak wedding season.

8. Can we personalize our ceremony?

Yes! While civil ceremonies follow a legal script, couples may choose to add personal vows, readings, or symbolic gestures (e.g., ring exchange). Just discuss this in advance with your officiant.

9. Is a rehearsal required?

A rehearsal is optional but recommended, especially for larger ceremonies or off-site locations. The fee for a rehearsal is $50.00

10. How do we get our marriage certificate after the ceremony?

After the ceremony, your officiant will register the marriage with the Province of Ontario. You can apply for your official marriage certificate through ServiceOntario about 6–8 weeks after the ceremony:

11. What if we want to renew our vows?

The Town offers vow renewal ceremonies for couples wishing to reaffirm their commitment. The fee is $226.00, and it does not require a marriage licence.

12. Do you provide witnesses?

Couples must bring two witnesses (age 18+). If you cannot provide your own, the Town may arrange witnesses for an additional fee of $20.00 per witness (with advance notice).
